Face mask exemption card announced
Earlier this week, the Scottish Government announced a face mask exemption card for people with health conditions which make it difficult for them to wear a mask.
You can read Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport, Jeane Freeman’s letter outlining the plans here.
We know that many people, even though they are exempt from wearing a mask in public, feel anxious or stressed when in public places due to being questioned or judged about not wearing a face covering.
Self Directed Support Scotland and our members support this initiative and welcome the announcement that the Scottish Government are “working on” the card.
People who have a health condition or who are disabled, including hidden disabilities, for example, autism, dementia or a learning disability, are exempt from wearing a face covering. A full list of reasons for being exempt can be found here.
If you, or someone you know, would benefit from a way to communicate that you’re exempt from wearing a mask before the card is available, please check out the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme, which helps people to discretely identify themselves as a person who may need additional support.
