Independent SDS Information and Support Survey (SDSS and Inspiring Scotland)

Independent SDS Information and Support Survey

Self Directed Support Scotland and Inspiring Scotland undertook a joint survey of Independent SDS Information and Support organisations, to understand the work they have been doing during the COVID-19 pandemic. This included both Scottish Government SIRD funded organisations and from the wider SDSS membership.

Many issues were highlighted, including the central importance that Independent SDS Information and support provides to the implementation of SDS across Scotland. Organisations told us that they supported more:

  • PA employers with advice on employment law, the implications of shielding and self isolation, PA changes and the furlough scheme
  • People affected by the temporary closure of day care centres that needed support to explore other options
  • People needing support with emergency planning and contingency measures
  • Unpaid carers that needed support as they struggled to cope and new carers who were seeking support for the first time
  • People needing to access food banks and additional financial support

Independent support organisations provided COVID-19 specific support to:

  • PA employers and unpaid carers to access PPE
  • By providing information to help people interpret government and local HSCP guidance, understand the
implications for their care and apply the guidance to their individual circumstances
  • By providing emotional support for people experiencing anxiety and mental health issues

In addition, Independent Support Organisations were able to reach people who were experiencing a great deal of social isolation due to lockdown or being without any informal of family support.

We see this survey as providing additional evidence of the unique and vital role that Independent SDS Information and Support organisations provide to the implementation of SDS across Scotland. These organisations are often closely connected to their communities and trusted by people to provide the support that they need.
